Instead, SketchUp is designed to produce drawings that look like they’ve been created by a draughtsman. SketchUp isn’t intended for producing photorealistic renderings, so there’s no advanced control over materials or lighting, although you can quickly apply bitmap textures and set up accurate location- and time-based shadows, as well as add fog to create a sense of depth. Before you do that, though, you need to get your scene looking just the way you want it. You can still print directly however, and also output to a number of bitmap formats. To use your models in further 3D-based workflows, you’re going to need the commercial Google SketchUp Pro 6, although native SKP file format support is spreading. You’re then ready to integrate your finished models with Google Earth and to post them to Google’s 3D Warehouse if you want to share them. Best of all, once you’ve finished your geometry, you can simply project your photos onto it to create an immediately recognisable textured model. Using this information, SketchUp works out the camera position, field of view and perspective accordingly, meaning you can quickly build up your model’s geometry using the image – ideally multiple images handled as scenes – as your guide. Based on the photo, you can quickly mark up horizontal and vertical lines, for example, based on a building’s windows, and then set a central origin, such as the point where two walls meet. This is accessed from a new floating palette from which you load your images. The most impressive new addition is the Photo Match capability. There’s also a new 3D Text tool that lets you set a font, size and extrusion depth, and creates actual geometry you can place into your scene. As well as the existing ability to create text and linked annotations that either remain fixed onscreen or follow the object they’re linked to, you can now set a fixed height for text so its size changes, like the model itself, depending on the zoom level. SketchUp’s text capabilities have also been overhauled. There’s also a Paste-in-Place command, which makes it simple to move selections in and out of geometry as desired. ![]() More advanced drawing power comes through enhancements to its intersection capabilities, which can now be limited to currently selected objects or to the current group or component. SketchUp’s core drawing capabilities have also been made easier to use with new modifier keys that let you quickly create copies of objects and force the direction in which a line should be locked. Most importantly, SketchUp now offers quicker handling – Google claims up to five times faster for some operations. By default, the main toolbar has been simplified, there’s a new Instructor palette, the Components and Materials browsers have been streamlined, and the new colouring of sky and ground planes plus the inclusion of a default figure in new scenes greatly helps orientation. For this first major update under the Google brand, the SketchUp interface has been reworked to make it more accessible to its new wider audience. ![]() Check out a list of money saving products I use, in order to drive your costs lower on things like cell phones, internet, energy, water, insurance, and much more. I’ve unintentionally created loads of friction in my work-flow, just because I’m such a tweaker and I really like to get into the details. It’s funny that you mention SOPHIE – she said something to me once which I think about all the time, which is that she is always looking to have as little friction as possible between what she’s thinking and feeling and what she’s making. Making music is where she experiences the least friction. So, I think I would give myself more ease. The irony with that is I feel like “struggle” is a quality I really seek out in other vocalists, but I have such a hard time hearing struggle in my own voice. Whenever I hear myself pushing for something and not quite getting it. You know the way most people feel about when they hear their voice – even their speaking voice recorded – they kind of cringe? I have that reaction whenever I hear myself struggling to hit notes. Your natural, unmodified voice does things that actually sound impossible to me, so I was wondering: if you could make any scientific or magical change to your voice, what would you do? This is maybe slightly more about evolution, but about seven years ago when I was first working on music with SOPHIE, we were talking about our vocal production and how it could eventually result in a transhuman modification of our own vocal cords. That was around the same age that I started banging out Disney songs on the piano by myself when I thought no one was listening, so around that age was my sort of melodic awakening. I realised that I had a special connection with hearing intervals. Then she’d play any other note on the keyboard and say “What is this note? What is this note? What is this note?” And even as a six year old I could tell her “That’s an F sharp”, or “That’s a D flat”. My parents put me in piano lessons as a five and six year old, and I had this really cool teacher who played a game with me where she’d have me stand in the corner facing away from the piano, and she would play a C and she’d say “Caroline, this is a C”. That was a bit of an awakening – where I realised that oh, maybe the connection I had with it was a bit special. There is little to no creativity in the typography department. The artistic practices of the previous decades in this field have been greatly reduced in spite of the technological advancements. Visual and aural similarities that can be considered characteristic features, appear throughout his extensive body of work. He created a number of typefaces, keeping in the mind the specific aesthetic and conceptual demands of his films. He was a talented typographer, artist and composer. Ray’s work especially can be read in relation to the modernist graphic design principles and sensibilities. Among auteurs who designed title sequences for their films, Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, Mrinal Sen, Mani Kaul are notable examples. He carved out his own distinctive style and his studio Ram Mohan Biographics also designed striking live action title sequences. Ram Mohan, known as the father of Indian animation, crafted a number of title sequences for Hindi films. Animation became an important medium for these sequences when colour film began to gain precedence. In contemporary films, motion graphics and animated sequences are frequently used to familiarize the viewer with motifs and images that will resonate while watching the film. Another prevalent practice is to intercut the title card with scenes from the film. Sometimes, the title sequences are designed to act as puns or metaphors to the text of the film. Then title sequences began acting as backstories or prologues for the film in order to manage the duration of the film or advance the plot quicker. The earliest title cards looked like the opening pages of a book – simply stating necessary information. The evolution of title sequence from a means to convey information to a designed sequence has taken decades. Depending on the contemporary art movements and technological advancements, the aesthetics vary and these three points can be used to trace the evolution of title sequences through the 100 years of Indian cinema. The main constituents of these sequences are text, visuals and sound. It set the tone and mood for the film by the choice of typeface, visuals and music all of which create a theme for how the makers want the viewers to engage with the film. So, the artistic side of the practice began to emerge with calligraphers, type artists, illustrators and designers being employed to create this ‘film within a film’ that could either act as a prologue or an epilogue. With the advent of sound films or ‘talkies’, the credit sequences primary function was reduced to providing information related to the artists who worked on the project. Furthermore, Bass’ design aesthetic was heavily influenced by the clean, modernist look of the Bauhaus, as it was translated into a particular idiom for corporate America. Rather than seeing each one of these aesthetic endeavors in isolation, the book argues that they all manifested a particular brand, revealing similar design strategies, themes, and visual looks, which have become identified with the post World War II era now associated with Madmen.
